Most people that lift weights are looking to put on lean muscle mass. But if you’re a skinny person (commonly known as a ‘hard gainer’), you’re probably looking to put on sheer mass.
Mass gainers and bulking supplements have become a popular choice for people who are trying to gain weight and need a surplus of calories. Optimum Nutrition’s Serious Mass is one of the most popular mass gainers on the market today, but does it deserve such popularity? Or are we just looking at another case of too much hype?
Taste and Mixability:
Optimum Nutrition has some tasty supplements (check out our review of their whey protein Gold Standard), and this one is no exception…if you pick the right flavor. Most people love the chocolate flavor, but the strawberry and vanilla flavors are pretty rough on the taste buds. In terms of mixability, the texture is actually pretty chalky, which might turn off a few people from this supplement.
Before our Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass review, we knew that mass gaining supplements were more expensive per serving than the average whey protein. Although the cost per serving is a little under $3.00, Serious Mass is still priced competitively compared to other mass gaining supplements, especially if you half the recommended serving size (which most people do) – it works out under $1.50.
With Optimum Nutrition, you can be pretty sure that you’ll get a respectable product. Serious Mass has a decent ingredient profile; it contains over 1,200 calories per serving which includes creatine, vitamins/minerals and high quality protein. It has everything you would want in a high quality mass gaining supplement. The only issue we could find in terms of value is that the recommended serving size is way too intense for the average recreational lifter.
The best price we found for 12lb was $47.95 at IllPumpYouUp.com.
Serious Mass delivers what it promises. At 1,250 calories per serving and 250 grams of carbohydrates, you will be able to pack on some size with this formula. Serious mass is a highly effective weight gain supplement perfect for any skinny guy or hard gainer.
Since you are ingesting such large amounts of calories, there’s a chance you could experience stomach discomfort or bloating. You can always half the serving size; this should help to prevent bloating issues.
Make sure to have plenty of extra fiber in your diet if you start using this (thank us later). And as always, check with your physician before using this (or any) supplement.
- 25 essential vitamins and minerals per serving
