Optimum Nutrition is often considered a reputable company, with high quality protein supplements being some of their greatest achievements (check out our Gold Standard Whey Review).
So, how does Optimum Nutrition’s pre-workout supplement Platinum Pre compare to other pre-workout supplements? Is this just a company trying to cash-in on their name or is this actually a solid pre-workout?
Taste and Mixability:
Platinum Pre comes in a few different flavors such as Twisted Apple, Super fruit, Fruit Punch, and Raspberry Lemonade (the flavor that most people liked).
During our Platinum Pre review, we found that the taste really wasn’t that good, if we’re being honest. A strange chalky taste at first, with an uncomfortable after taste.
Raspberry Lemonade was the only one we could actually enjoy. There are plenty of pre-workouts that have much better tastes (C4 Extreme from Cellucor being a prime example). This product mixes fairly easily with water in a standard shaker bottle. Wouldn’t recommend going with a standard water bottle; definitely need a blender ball for this one.
The price of Platinum Pre is more or less the same as its competition. It is typically priced at around $1/£1 per serving. An important thing to note is that this product is easily tolerable which means that, more likely than not, you’re going to have to take more than the minimum dosage after a week if you expect to feel anything.
But remember, value is a combination of price and effectiveness. It’s not just about how inexpensive the supplement is; it’s about how much are you getting for the money.
The best price we found for a 240g tub (30 servings) was $30.95 at IllPumpYouUp.com.
Platinum Pre is definitely not the strongest pre-workout on the market. We want to make a note that this product contains a few of our favorite pre-workout ingredients such as Beetroot Juice (increases blood flow and nutrient absorption) as well as Beta Alanine (another great blood flow stimulator). This pre-workout is marketed as having value because of how your body can absorb more muscle building ingredients.
Let’s be serious for a moment. Most people buy pre-workout to experience a high energy boost and a spike in mental clarity. For all its bells and whistles, Platinum Pre doesn’t fulfill that base requirement. Frankly, everything that this pre-workout is trying to do has already been done (for cheaper) by other companies.
The only side effect that you might experience with Platinum Pre is a tingling of the skin due to the Beta Alanine. This is not dangerous – and is fairly common with beta alanine based pre-workout supplements.
- Increased nutrient absorption (beetroot & beta alanine)
- Reputable company
- Slightly overpriced
- Weak energy increase and very little spike in mental clarity
- No creatine
Platinum Pre – Our Verdict:
Platinum Pre is a not the highest quality pre-workout supplement we’ve reviewed. We found that its main benefit is the inclusion of beetroot and beta alanine. While these are great, the lack of consistent effectiveness is sure to turn off plenty of people from taking this supplement.
