Progress is a beautiful thing. Just take a look at the fitness community. Over the last couple decades, fitness has become more popular than ever.

As society changes, so do our industries. Take a look at Platinum Hydro Builder; an all-in-one supplement by the people at Optimum Nutrition. Here we have an established, reputable company experimenting with an interesting concept, trying to create something genuinely useful. Of course, whether or not they succeeded is still up for debate.

Taste and Mixability:

Before addressing this issue, it’s important to recognize that Hydro Builder is designed with hydrolyzed whey protein as its cornerstone. We’ll get into the hydrolysis process later on in the Platinum Hydro Builder review, but for now, there’s one piece of information you need to have.

Hydrolyzed whey protein tastes bitter. Noticeably so, actually. Now, to their credit, Optimum Nutrition did its best to make this supplement a bit more tolerable. Still, Hydro Builder’s taste may be an issue for some. Mixability (while certainly not as much) was also a bit of an issue, never fully dissolving into the water, with a bit of a grainy texture. Nothing too jarring, just something worth considering.

Value:

We’re always saying that value is a combination of price and quality. The cheapest supplement in the world is useless if it doesn’t work. That being said, we feel confident in saying that, considering what you get for your money, Hydro Builder is worth giving a shot.

Listen, this supplement has a few issues, of course (that’s something you expect with an experimental supplement). That being said, for $1.30 per serving, you’re getting a pretty good deal.

The best price we found for a 2.29 lb tub (20 servings) was $29.45 at IllPumpYouUp.com.

Effectiveness:

Hydrolysis is what this supplement seems to be championing. While we have no problem with hydrolysis (it’s actually a fascinating concept), we do have a problem with how this supplement approaches it. Frankly, it seems to be more of a marketing tactic than an actual focal point.

Think of it this way: hydrolyzed whey protein (which is safe, by the way) is just whey protein that was broken down into smaller protein fragments for rapid digestion. So, why on earth would a company throw in casein protein and 2.5 grams of fat into their supplement? Both are going to get in the way of rapid absorption. Which actually brings us to our next question: why use a protein blend? Particularly one that doesn’t clearly label how much of each protein source it uses? Hydro Builder seems to have an issue with this concept because their enzyme blend (which uses Amylase and Beet Root Fiber, among other things) and their amino acid matrix are both proprietary blends.

Of course, it’s not all bad. In fact, Hydro Builder does a fantastic job with some of its other aspects. The 5 grams of Creatine per serving (for increased muscular development) definitely impressed us. Plus, it came with 30 grams of protein which might be a bit lower than most people are used to getting from an all-in-one protein, but was more than enough to support the average athletes’ physical demands.

Which brings us to the final point of our Platinum Hydro Builder review: even with all of its issues, this supplement still did its job. Most people experienced noticeable muscle growth while taking this supplement, that much is for sure. Plus, the enzyme complex for digestion was useful too (in spite of not knowing how much of each ingredient was in it).

Side Effects:

Nothing particularly surprising here. If at any point while taking this supplement, you feel ill or nauseous, stop taking it immediately. Consult your physician before continuing.

For For

  • 30g of protein
  • 5g of Creatine
  • Enzyme complex to aid digestion
  • Relatively cheap (considering what you get)

Against Against

  • Taste can be a little bitter
  • Proprietary blends (protein, enzyme and amino acids)
  • Fats and casein slow down absorption of hydrolyzed protein

Platinum Hydro Builder – Our Verdict:

It’s always exciting to see a company taking risks. It means that, even with all their success, they care about making better projects for people and that is what Optimum Nutrition tried to do here. Did they pull it off? Depends on who you ask. We think that, considering the price and ingredient list, that this supplement is still worth your time if you’re curious about it. At the end of the day, all you can do is try it for yourself and see how it works for you.
