These days, everyone is looking for a boost. Even elite athletes are looking for supplements that give them an edge, whether it’s at the pre-workout stage, during the workout or the recovery stage.

Pro Complex is a whey protein by Optimum Nutrition that markets itself as the supplement designed for elite athletes. Is this just a marketing tactic to get more people to buy? Or are we actually looking at a supplement that can help true fitness enthusiasts take their recovery process to the next level?

Taste and Mixability:

First, let’s take a look at the most superficial of all these aspects: the taste. Honestly, Pro Complex does an amazing job in this department, especially considering the demographic it targets. If you were worried that this would taste awful simply because it was ‘designed for the pros’, then you can rest easy.

Vanilla definitely steals the show, with a solid flavor that doesn’t taste artificial, yet still manages to be enjoyable. Chocolate was a close second for us, with a slightly artificial taste, but nothing that should distract you. And the mixability? Fantastic. With something as protein dense as this, you’d expect it to come out ridiculously thick. In reality, this supplement has more of a rich consistency than a thick one.

Value:

Pro Complex is not designed for the casual athlete, something that even its price will make you aware of. The recommended dose is actually only enough for 20 training sessions, which would end up costing you about $2.65 per serving. That’s easily one of the most expensive supplements we’ve reviewed on our website.

Frankly, some people just end up taking a half serving after every training session instead of the full serving. They end up doubling the lifespan of the supplement, while still getting just as much protein as they need (30 grams is plenty). At a more reasonable price of $1.32 per serving, this supplement is still a great option, even if your budget is a little tight (Still too pricey? Go ahead and check out some of our other whey protein reviews; you’ll find something in your price range!).

The best price we found for a 3.35 lb tub (20 servings) was $55.05 at Bodybuilding.com.

Effectiveness:

Now, we get to the fun part: breaking down the supplement and seeing whether or not it’s worth your time (and money). Frankly, we find the ingredient list to be a bit underwhelming. Sure, Pro Complex has 60 grams of protein with only 270 calories. But is there anything that really blows us away? Not really. That being said, the ingredients are definitely high-quality and we felt little, if any, soreness the day after a workout.

Other than the decent amount of calcium in this supplement, the only other thing that caught our eye was the 10.5 grams of L-Glutamine, an amino acid that helps restore your energy levels and can even help stop muscular breakdown. For the record, this supplement worked well for us. Was it worth the amount of money they charged? Maybe not quite, but when you know you’re getting a quality product that works, a few extra dollars aren’t the end of the world.

Side Effects:

Pro Complex doesn’t have any wild or crazy side effects to watch out for. Of course, if at any point you feel ill, stop using this supplement immediately and consult your physician.

Optimum Nutrition Pro Complex – Our Verdict:

If there was one constant throughout our Optimum Nutrition Pro Complex review, it was the focus on creating a high-quality supplement. Yet, even after Optimum Nutrition crossed all their T’s and dotted all their I’s, this whey protein supplement just didn’t blow us away. Will elite athletes find it useful? We’re sure they will. But is Pro Complex a must-have supplement for everyone? No, not really. If you’re looking for a reputable whey protein supplement and you don’t mind paying a bit extra for something high-quality, go ahead and pick this up.
