Protein bars seem to have developed a certain level of infamy in the fitness industry.  It used to be quite normal to expect a high quality protein bar to taste awful. But today, the fitness industry is more active and competitive than ever before. Fit has become the new skinny. CrossFit (whether you love it or hate it) has made fitness popular again, which means that consumers are getting better supplements than ever before. With that in mind, the minds at Met-Rx set out to create a supplement that would help change the way we look at protein bars.

Taste and Texture:

If there’s one thing we want to touch upon in this Met-Rx Big 100 Colossal bars review, it’s that these bars taste fantastic. If we had to pick a favorite, Super Cookie Crunch steals the show. That being said, every flavor was solid and we’re sure you’ll love whichever flavor you pick.

One huge complaint that people have about protein bars is that they often have a texture that can only be described as “chalky”. The Big 100 bars not only avoid this problem, but impress us with a chewy texture.

Value:

At first glance, Met-Rx Big 100 Colossal bars might seem to be on the pricey side of protein bars. Each bar will end up costing you about $2.60, which some people might find expensive. But before you start complaining too hard, keep in mind that these are 3.5 ounce bars.

Not only are they huge (seriously, they are), but they come packed with 32 grams of protein, tons of vitamin B-12, B-6, C, E and A. Many people break the bars in half and use them as 2 servings. Frankly, they’re not cheap because high-quality supplements aren’t supposed to be.

The best price we found for a box of 9 bars was $23.45 at Bodybuilding.com.

Effectiveness:

Met-Rx Big 100 Colossal bars are marketed as meal replacement bars, so we reviewed them based on their ability to keep hunger at bay and support your muscle growth. Ideally, a well-designed protein bar should be able to use protein to efficiently suppress your appetite. Basically, the high levels of protein in the bar should help you feel full. Met-Rx does a great job of not only using protein to help suppress your hunger, but also gives your body carbohydrates and fats to absorb. These bars make it easier for your body to handle the lack of actual food by providing you with plenty of supplemental nutrients.

Speaking of which, nutrients are critical when it comes to muscular development. A quick look at the ingredients list shows that the Met-Rx Big 100 Colossal bars take muscle growth seriously. 30% of the calcium you need, 50% of all the iron you need. Never mind how the bar covers B-vitamins, Zinc, and even Copper (seriously). What we have here is a supplement company that understands how important it is to cover all their bases. Not only did they manage create a protein bar that supports you in multiple ways, but they found a way to make it taste great too!

Side Effects:

Interestingly enough, Met-Rx Big 100 Colossal bars only have one side effect that you should keep in mind. Every bar contains sugar alcohols, which may cause gastrointestinal discomfort for some people. Actually, excessive consumption has been known to have a laxative effect on people. If you experience any of these symptoms (or just start to feel sick), stop eating them immediately and consult your physician.
