Cellucor is easily one of the most recognizable supplement companies in existence. In fact, Cellucor C4 quickly became one of the most popular pre-workout powders, something that plenty of people use today.
The question is: does the stuff work? Some people swear by this pre-workout, while others claim it’s overpriced and they can’t feel it working at all. Is Cellucor C4 high quality? Or is it just Cellucor’s latest cash cow?
Taste and Mixability:
Obviously, taste is something of a subjective issue. Some people might find certain supplements disgusting, while other people might love the same taste. Here at TheSupp.com, we found that the taste of C4 was actually pretty good, once you get used to it. In terms of taste (as well as mixability) we’d say that this pre-workout definitely delivers.
C4 dissolves easily into water, no blender ball needed for this one. Plus, you won’t get any of that foam that sometimes happens with other supplements once you start shaking them. Although a bit jarring the first time you try it, the taste easily beats out its competitors (MusclePharm’s Assault and BSN’s No Xplode being the closest competitors, in terms of quality and popularity). Our personal favorite? Icy Blue Razz wins pretty easily. The Fruit Punch flavor is the closest second, with a pretty solid taste, but something of a strange aftertaste once you’ve finished.
Cellucor C4 is clearly a pretty expensive pre-workout powder. While we could just shoot out a generic phrase like “you get what you pay for”, we all know that isn’t true for supplements. With C4, you get what you pay for…almost. While this supplement lacks any glaring, unforgivable flaws, it certainly isn’t the most amazing supplement we’ve tried. Especially when you consider how Cellucor has the resources to create one of the best pre-workout supplements on the market, it’s a shame they haven’t taken advantage of this opportunity.
Let’s be clear: we think C4 is a respectable pre-workout powder and deserves praise. That being said, C4 is notorious for being easily tolerable after a few weeks using it. We figured that, with such a high price tag, we’d get something that was leaps and bounds ahead of the competition. What we actually got was a pre-workout that barely beats out its competitors and expects us to pay top dollar for it. Overall, it’s a good product. But, for the money they’re asking, we’d like a great product.
The best price we found for a 117g tub (30 servings) was $42.68 at Amazon.com.
During our C4 Extreme review, we found one main issue with Cellucor’s C4. At first, C4 is definitely an effective pre-workout. High energy levels and mental clarity within a half hour. The only problem? After about a week on this pre-workout, we had to start taking twice the recommended dosage to feel anything.
Tolerance is a huge issue when it comes to pre-workouts. You might have the best supplement on the market, but if it stops working for us after a week, we’re going to be a little upset. After all, we pay for 30 servings, expecting to get a month’s worth of pre-workout out of this. In reality, we might get 3 weeks’ worth of pre-workout.
Now, obviously this is an issue with almost any supplement in existence. But we’ve never had it happen so quickly! When it comes to our actual energy levels, they were respectable while on C4 – nothing too mind blowing but the trade-off is that we didn’t have an intense crash after it wore off, something that’s important for people who work out mornings or just hate that crash feeling.
Just something to keep in mind: while on this pre-workout, you might experience a slight tingling. Nothing too scary or intense. In fact, we barely felt anything (our energy levels were too high to really notice it). If you experience this, not to worry. This is actually very common and not dangerous at all. You’re just feeling the Beta Alanine that C4 has.
- Great taste
- Fantastic mixability
- Substantial creatine dosage
- Arginine helps with absorption and muscle pumps
- Synephrine thrown in for added fat loss support (great for cutting)
- Little (if any) crash
- Slightly overpriced
- Some people might find the tingling uncomfortable
- Body quickly develops tolerance
- Not much stronger than competitors when it comes to energy and mental clarity
C4 Extreme – Our Verdict:
Let’s be absolutely clear: C4 is a high quality pre-workout formula. Just taking a look at the ingredients list shows that it was designed for effectiveness.
Consisting of creatine nitrate, arginine, synephrine, beta alanine and caffeine, Cellucor C4 is a solid pre-workout choice for someone who has not taken a pre-workout powder before, or has a low tolerance for energy drinks and caffeine products.
